Depending on how destructive the adware was, you might be able to do a reinstall in place also called a repair in place. Essentiallly you reinstall the OS from the original CD but choose the R option. Here is a URL http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
BTW, the Microsoft sites are not bad if you can find the right page. The search engines on the sites are poor, but if you get to the right page the instructions are pretty clear. Here are some URLs.
http://support.microsoft.com/
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/default.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO
The first site will be easiest to use. The technet isn't hard if you get to the right section. The last is the knowledge base. It is a search engine that looks for the topic you are trying to deal with. Unfortunately, the search does not work well and often the topics it displays are just a little off.
I've had pretty good luck just typing the question into Google.
Just phrase it like a natural language question. For example:
How can I repair my xp operating system after adware?
It's surprising how often the answer comes up. After a while you will get to know the 6 to 12 places that are really helpful.
Best,
Norm

Simply goto the website of your computer manufacturer, call the 1-800 number and order a restore cd. They probably need your serial number or model number or both. It costs about $8 plus shipping. This should do the trick.
Please let me know if you need further help.

You do not need to reformat the drive c, you only have to select " delete partition" once you install windows ex again. It is under "where do you want to install windows xp to" in the setup of windows xp.
It should be step 1. install 2. agree to license agreement 3. or 4. around here...select "delete partition" and then create new partition and then you can install xp. It will format the partition, select NTFS and then it will install itself. First it copies the files over for about 10 min, then it will reboot and install.
Let me know if you have any other questions...or need the partitioning explained in further detail.
